How Will This Seminar Benefit You?

Optical Research Associates (ORA®) invites you to this free seminar, which will teach participants new methods and tools for designing automotive illumination applications faster and more efficiently.

The seminar's presenters will demonstrate practical examples of using LightTools' groundbreaking illumination optimization capability to achieve dramatic system performance improvements quickly and automatically. The seminar will also cover the new SolidWorks® Link Module, which allows designers to assign optical properties to and optimize SolidWorks 3D opto-mechanical models within LightTools, while maintaining complete parametric interoperability between the two programs for seamless information sharing.

Schedule of Presentations

The illumination design half-day seminar will be offered twice on June 11:

    • Session 1 - 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
    • Session 2 - 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.

You can sign up for either a morning or afternoon session. Each session will include the following presentations:

  • Introductions and Overview of ORA

  • Optimizing Instrument Clusters for Uniform Illuminance
    William Cassarly, ORA
New improvements to optimization algorithms now make it possible to optimize complex texture extraction patterns for LCD backlights, cell phone key pads, and automotive instrument clusters. This presentation will demonstrate a technique to set up and optimize a full instrument cluster using these new algorithms.

  • Directed Lighting: Optimizing an LED Map Lamp Using the SolidWorks Link Module
    Patrick Le Houillier, ORA
This presentation will illustrate how to integrate a SolidWorks model into the illumination design and analysis software LightTools, using the new SolidWorks Link Module. Specifically, the presentation will show how LightTools can access SolidWorks parameters to change individual parts and assemblies. A demonstration will conclude by showing how the LightTools Optimization Module can harness the power of SolidWorks to achieve the desired lit results from a model by changing key SolidWorks elements.

  • Optimizing a Projector Headlamp
    Mike Zollers, ORA
This presentation will provide a walkthrough of the design process, using illumination optimization, which resulted in a legal U.S. projector headlamp for an H7 halogen bulb. A rigorous discussion of design considerations and a user-defined merit function will be given.

  • LightTools Demonstration
  • Questions and Answers

Each presentation will last approximately 30-45 minutes.

Speakers

William Cassarly, Ph.D., is a Senior Scientist in ORA's Illumination Engineering Group. His extensive background in illumination design and non-imaging optics includes more than 20 patents and publications. He also teaches SPIE Illumination Design short courses.

Patrick Le Houillier is a LightTools Application Sales Engineer at ORA, and has over 8 years' experience with illumination design software, CAD software, and semiconductor technologies.

Mike Zollers is a Senior Optical Engineer, Marketing, for ORA. He has worked with automotive lighting for more than 5 years, both for automotive Tier 1 suppliers and as a design consultant.
