Our Software and Services Have Numerous Applications
What do people do with ORA software? CODE V® can support a broad range of customer applications, and ORA's engineering services have explored many of them on behalf of hundreds of clients.
Example optical systems include photographic, cinema, and video zoom lenses; the Hubble Space Telescope first servicing optics; spectrometers and other multi-spectral systems; scanners of many types; and binary and other diffractive optics systems.
Note that systems developed for illustrative or instructional purposes (such as the ones shown here) are typically less complex than systems designed for engineering clients. Any systems developed for a client are proprietary to the client and are never shown or discussed publicly without the client's permission. |

Photographic Lenses
Photographic lenses are a "classical" application of design software, and improved lenses continue to be designed and built, often with the help of CODE V's excellent local and global optimization features. The CODE V graphic shows an ultra-wide angle "fisheye" lens. The 35 mm SLR camera demonstrates LightTools' modeling and visualization abilities, complete with mechanical and optomechanical parts, as well as the usual lenses, mirrors, and prisms. |

Zoom Lenses
Zoom lenses are widely used in video and film cameras
as well as in still photography. Requirements for high image quality,
long zoom range, light weight, low cost, and more are often in
conflict, making zoom design extremely challenging. CODE V has
special zoom design features that make it the premier tool in this

Hubble Space Telescope
Engineering projects are generally confidential, but the "Hubble first servicing" generated wide publicity and a number of technical papers that cited ORA's work on Hubble, so we can make an exception and mention our participation in various projects and committees that contributed to the servicing mission. CODE V files were a convenience to the many organizations that worked on the Hubble first servicing mission, allowing them to easily and reliably share data for the many subsystems involved. Spectrometers
Spectrometers, multispectral cameras, imaging radiometers and dozens of other scientific instruments have been designed with CODE V. Engineers in industry and government use ORA software to design, analyze, and troubleshoot instruments for many space and terrestrial applications. ORA engineers have worked extensively on many such systems (ORA received a special NASA award for optically related work on many projects for the US space program). |

Laser Scanning Systems
Laser scanning systems are used in supermarket product code readers, in laser printers, and in many other applications. CODE V has Gaussian beam analysis and other features that help in the design and analysis of scanners. LightTools is ideal for visualizing folded systems and potential packaging conflicts that may inhibit performance. |

Binary and Other Diffractive Optics
Diffractive optics provide expanded options for optical designers, from micro-optics lens arrays to color correction of IR systems to holographic headup displays (HHUDs) for aircraft. CODE V and LightTools provide powerful features for designing and modeling such systems, and ORA's customers and in-house engineering staff have made good use of diffractive optics on many projects in recent years. The CODE V graphic shows a two-element all-germanium thermal IR objective with excellent color correction (achieved via a diamond turned diffractive surface on the front element). |
