Education

2003 M.S.. Degree in Optics, University of Arizona
1981 B.S. Degree in Physics, San Diego State University
He has a broad background in optical engineering and lens design for commercial products ranging from high-cost capital equipment for electronics manufacturing to high-volume, low cost consumer goods. He also has significant business experience in assisting customers to develop cost-effective products. Many of these projects utilized various forms of laser scanning architectures. He has designed anamorphic, achromatic, catadioptric optical systems for UV raster imaging phototools and created the blueprint for the manufacturing processes of these complex optical systems. He has also developed color photoplotter optical systems utilizing apochromatic zoom optics that could use either laser or arc-source illuminators. He has also manufactured both input and output scanning systems for high-speed aperture card reader/writers. Some of the more esoteric scanning optics designs have included an eye-safe, video-rate 3D imaging laser radar, and a high-speed, high resolution 3D scanning system for circuit board component inspection prior to solder reflow. He has also developed several production designs for high-volume laser printer optics, and is experienced in volume manufacturing methods.
Aside from laser scanning systems, he has designed and built fingerprint identification systems, optics for film-based digital data recovery, and rear-screen cine projection systems for viewing 35mm film of pediatric cardiac angiograms. Other medical device experience includes manufacturing process development for laser photo-coagulators used in retinal re-attachment surgery.
