LightTools 6.2 Service Release is Now Available for Download

The LightTools 6.2 Service Release is now available for download. This update to version 6.2 included fixes to over 20 customer reported issues. Use the button below to obtain more details and to download this update. We strongly encourage all users to apply this Service Release.

Please note that this Service Release requires LightTools 6.2 be installed before applying. If you are a current customer and have not received LightTools 6.2 yet, please contact ORA or your local ORA Software Distributor.

Using BSDF Data to Model Scattering in LightTools

LightTools 6.2 includes the ability to use measured bidirectional scattering distribution function (BSDF) data to model surface scattering. BSDF is the ratio of radiance and irradiance of scattered light as a function of its angle of incidence and other parameters such as wavelength, index, etc.

In LightTools, you can use line scan (1D slice) or full scan (2D grid) BSDF data obtained from measurement suppliers. A sample library of measured BSDF data is available on the LightTools 6.2 supplemental CD or via download from ORA’s Customer Support Web site, www.oraservice.com. The library currently includes measured data for 25 reflective surfaces commonly used in luminaire design and 15 transmissive materials (diffusers) commonly used in backlit display systems. ORA will continue to expand this library and make the new measured data available for download from www.oraservice.com.

If you would like to use your own measured BSDF data from either an outside supplier or from your own measuring equipment, the LightTools Core Module User’s Guide includes a complete description of the file format required for using BSDF data with LightTools. You’ll also find more details on the complete BSDF modeling capability in LightTools.

The BSDF modeling feature in LightTools allows you to preview the BSDF data file so that you can verify it is properly formatted, etc. The image below shows a preview of measured BSDF data for an Alanod reflective surface measured at angles of incidence of 5º, 25º, 45º, and 65º.

If you have any questions, or would like any assistance in using your own BSDF data, please do not hesitate to contact the ORA Technical Support Team, service@opticalres.com. We're here to help!

Updated Training Materials

Both the LightTools Introductory and Advanced Topics training materials have been updated on ORA's Customer Support Web site, www.oraservice.com, under LightTools Support > Training Materials. The update includes new features introduced in LightTools 6.2 as well as several additional workshop problems.
