CODE V Tip – New Macro for Calculating MTF Using Beam Propagation Data

Diffraction-based MTF in CODE V is calculated using an auto-correlation integral of the pupil function.*  This method works well for most optical systems. However, for systems where the entrance pupil cannot be directly mapped to the exit pupil, the auto-correlation method cannot be used. Examples of such systems include the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) where two apertures are combined to form one image, and systems where parts of the pupil are flipped or rotated, as illustrated in the double-dove prism example below.

ORA's Technical Support Team has created a new macro, BSP2DMTF.seq, for calculating the MTF of nearly any optical systems.  This macro takes the output of CODE V’s Beam Synthesis Propagation (BSP) to obtain the PSF of the system, and then performs a Fourier Transform of the PSF to calculate the MTF.  The macro can calculate and plot the standard MTF vs. spatial frequency as well as calculate the 2D MTF.

Examples of using this macro are described in a presentation given last month at the 2010 CODE V User Group Meetings.  This presentation, "Using BSP to Calculate 2D MTF," as well as the BSP2DMTF.seq macro, are available for download from ORA’s Customer Support Web Site, www.oraservice.com.  Four separate examples of using BSP to calculate MTF are included in the presentation. Sample files of each example are also available for download.

IODC Design Contest Winners

Congratulations to CODE V user Rob Bates, of FiveFocal LLC, for winning the 2010 IODC design contest for imaging systems!  ORA's Jeff Hoffman and John Isenberg placed second and third, respectively.

ORA's Bill Cassarly took home first place in the illumination design contest using LightTools.

2010 CODE V User Group Meetings

The 2010 CODE V User Group Meetings were held last month in Pasadena, San Jose, and Rochester.  Thank you to all the CODE V users who attended these events.  Post-event surveys were positive.  For those unable to attend, copies of presentations from the meetings are now available on ORA's Customer Service Web Site, www.oraservice.com, under CODE V Support > User Group Presentations.  These presentations include:
