An Overview of CODE V 10.1

CODE V 10.1 was shipped to all current customers beginning in mid-July. Here’s an overview of the main enhancements included in version 10.1, including links to brief video demonstrations for some.

  • Beam Synthesis Propagation: CODE V 10.1 includes the formal release of a new Beam Synthesis Propagation (BSP) feature.  BSP is a highly accurate, beamlet-based method for diffraction based beam propagation.  A Beta version of BSP was previously included in CODE V 10.0 as a command-only feature.  A new graphical user interface has been added in version 10.1 as well as enhancements to BSP graphics, including a new beamlet footprint plot (shown below) that can be used to display the size and orientation of the beamlets incident on a surface.



    The new BSP option can be useful for analyzing slow optical system where divergence due to diffraction can be significant.  It is also useful for near-field diffraction analyses and for systems where the amplitude or phase is modified near the focus, such as with a grating, phase plate, or spatial filter. 
  • Fiber Coupling Efficiency (CEF): The existing capability for defining the input beam for CEF has been extended to include vector field data from BSP.
  • 2D Image Simulation (IMS) Default Object: Users can now specify their own default input object file for use in CODE V’s 2D Image Simulation (IMS) feature. 
  • Expanded File Versioning Support: CODE V now supports file versioning for file names containing spaces.  In addition, users can now disable (or enable) file versioning for all CODE V files.
  • Derivative Increments for Optimization: A new method for calculating derivative increments used during optimization (AUT) is now available for use with optical system where the optimization error function is not strongly related to wavefront errors or surface sag.
  • Glass Database and Test Plate Updates: Updates from Hoya, Schott, Sumita, Hikari, Pilkington, and China glass catalogs have been made.  CODE V’s test plate fitting data now includes test plates from Tucson Optical Research Company.
  • PSD-Based Mid-Spatial-Frequency Surface Error Modeling: CODE V 10.1 includes new commands for modeling mid-spatial-frequency surface errors that are accounted for in the BSP option.  This capability is released as a command-only Beta feature in CODE V 10.1.  Detailed release notes on this new feature are installed as part of the CODE V Electronic Document Library.

Quick Tip – Transferring Your CODE V GUI Setting After You Update

When you upgrade to CODE V 10.1, don’t forget to use the ORA Registry Converter Utility to copy any of your CODE V GUI customization from earlier versions.  This utility is available in the CODE V 10.1 installation folder (e.g., C:\CODEV101).

This utility will move all of your GUI customization, favorite lenses, and personalized spectral profiles from CODE V 10.0 (or earlier, if you didn’t install 10.0) to CODE V 10.1.  More details regarding the ORA Registry Converter Utility can be found in the June 2009 issue of CODE V Enews.
