Quick Tip – Design Study of CD/DVD Pickup Units

Most DVD players today must also provide compatibility with CDs, requiring a single lens model that supports:

  • Two wavelengths at two numerical apertures
  • Two different disk thicknesses
  • Two different working distances

To support these common uses, a dual-zone hybrid lens, using aspheric and diffractive properties, is often employed.  CODE V includes several features that help facilitate the accurate modeling, optimization, analysis, and tolerancing of these unique optical systems.

A new application specific training presentation on designing CD/DVD Pickup Units in CODE V has been added to ORA's Customer, www.oraservice.com, under CODE V Support > Training Materials

This design study includes background on CD/DVD Pickups as well as challenges facing the optical designer.  Two methods for modeling CD/DVD Pickups in CODE V are presented.  The first method uses CODE V's non-sequential surface (NSS) capability, while the second method uses CODE V's user-defined surface capability.

The pros and cons of each modeling method are presented.  Topics covered in these design methods include using diffractive optical elements (DOEs) and user-defined HOEs, user-defined optimization constraints, modeling apodization using CODE V interferogram files, and techniques for accounting phase discontinuity at the CD/DVD lens interface.  The presentation concludes with a hands-on workshop problem and solution.  Example files and supporting files are also available for download.

Updates to ORA's Customer Service Web Site

The following additions have been recently made to the CODE V Support section of www.oraservice.com:

  • The November issue of CODE V E-news, which included an overview of the new features in CODEV V version 9.80, is available under CODE V Enews & Tips.

  • A new training presentation on designing CV/DVD Pickup Units is available under Training Materials.
